    • I would be Erin Grumwell because she was an innovative teacher. As teachers we have to "reach them to teach them." Erin was first able to get the respect of her students when she displayed zero tolerance for intolerance. As a result of viewing a racist picture drawn about one of her students, Erin reacted by discussing the similarities and differences between her classroom and the Holocaust. Before long students were discussing their lives as feeling trapped, manipulated, and enslaved. Many felt compelled to write their stories. "Freedom Writers" is a collection of student journal entries. Erin was able to reach high needs kids. She changed their lives in high school, and many went on to get college degrees. Erin Grumwell was a master teacher.

I wish we had many more teachers like her, but not only for high needs kids, rather for every child. Imagine the difference a teacher can make if he or she can make those kinds of connection within the first few years of school.
