8th grade math teacher. I was about 12 or 13. He was goofing around at the beginning of the class. Prior to getting into the lesson of the day, he decided he was going to go around and tell us the origin of our names, e.g., a friend who's name was "Amoret", he broke down as "little love". When he got to me, he couldn't figure out the origin of my first name since it was a little odd (no, it's not the name you see here). So he decided to discuss my last name which is "Weal". As a word, 'weal' means 'well-being, for the good of the people', etc. He began with, "Weal means "welfare"..." and the classroom erupted with laughter. A Caucasian teacher decided to make a joke at a very shy 13 year old girl's expense in an urban school. Way to go, man.
