When God told Adam and Eve that if they ate, or even touched the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, that they would surely die, he didn't say they would go to a fiery burning hell and be tortured for eternity either. Genesis 2:7 states that "Man became a living soul."
Death is simply the absence of life. The scriptures also say that the "soul that is sinning will die."
If when a person dies he just transferred from one version of life to another, what would have Jesus died for, if his providing a sacrifice to save people served no purpose? Why would the Bible talk about a resurrection of the dead, if they weren't really dead? If Lazarus wasn't dead, but simply living in another form, why did Jesus, through the power of God's holy spirit, resurrect him, after he had been dead for several days? Seeing isn't always believing. Hallucinations?
