This may be a silly act of kindness but kindness for animals nonetheless. I live in a somewhat rural part of Virginia. During the commute to my university I enjoy taking the back roads in order to relax and enjoy the sights and smells of life less disrupted. It was a beautiful Spring afternoon and I was heading back home from class. I rounded a curve and notice a very small, round, slow-moving (but moving) object in the middle of the road. I quickly realized that it was a box turtle, a very common species for the area. Although he could have made it across without harm, I wasn't about to take that chance. I safely picked out a spot to pull over, checked for traffic and walked over to it. The turtle abruptly retreated as I bent down to gently pick up the dome-shaped shell. I then carried it across the remainder of his "designated" path and placed him safely down an embankment in the tall grass. Now no one saw me rescue it and I can guarantee that the turtle can in no way, shape or form repay me for saving him. Let's just hope he made across the train tracks ;)
