In most cases yes, but the only exception to this would be Harry Potter. As many times as I have tried, I could never get past the second chapter of the first Harry Potter book, I could never get into the book. But the movies are amazing with the actions and the chemistry between the characters.
Aside from Harry Potter though, I have yet to find a movie better than the book. Books have more feeling and have more of a background story, so the reader feels closer to the characters compared to watching a 2 hour movie that is only filled with the "good parts". Books are proof that the little things do matter, especially in a love story (Twilight).

The first two Harry Potter books aren't like the rest of the series in many respects. By the end of Chamber of Secrets, Rowling really found her stride, which is to be expected with something done in installments. I'd encourage you to give the books another shot, or start with Prisoner of Azkaban. There are soo many details the movies leave out that add a ton to the story.
