Birthdays have never been a time of celebration for me. They have always triggered that sense of a momentous occasion, a time for introspection to take stock of what I've done since the last birthday, how I've grown (or not) and what I would like to see happen in the upcoming year. A big party, or even a small one, would be distracting and counterproductive for me. I avoid the birthday celebration as much as possible and my family respect my wishes for the most part. My mother was never big on parties for us so it was not an issue as a child. I was happily left to my own devices back then:)

I agree---it is a chance and an important step to think about the last year and evaluate where you are going forward in your life. As with New Years resolutions, I need to get better about listening to my plans and sticking to them!
