I would like to believe in fate because it provides a link to the essentially unexplainable. For example: why did my mother have to die? Was it truly for the purpose of teaching me to be a more caring person, being the one (and my brother) left to care for my ailing father? Why was I let go from a job? Was it so I could be brought closer to my developing my passion as a career? But I also believe in personal responsibility - we all have choices. Aren't we responsible for our own destiny?
