    • My first real job: book cover designer
    • I was on an arts scholarship at a university in Boston and I took a part time job moving heavy boxes for the publishing company Little, Brown. The art department went out for lunch so I snuck onto a Mac and designed a book cover--then I slipped it into the pile going out for approval by sales and editorial in New York City.

My cover was selected! When the art director returned and found out it was my work he offered me a job. So I dropped out of school and became a full-time book cover designer. The two years I spent designing covers was like an apprenticeship for me--graphic design is an excellent field of study because it teaches you the art of creative problem solving.

Very interesting. What book cover are you most proud of that you designed?

I love that you snuck your cover in-very clever and rewarding! I'm in advertising but love book design and page layout, and I absolutely agree with you on graphic design teaching you the art of creative problem solving...it's definitely a constant learning process.
