nice picks! but i must ask -- when i get my transfer from citizens bank (here in the states) to the royal bank of scotland (our parent company), should i hit up bristol to start a trip-hop band (a la portishead, et al)? i know it'd be quite a distance from edinburgh, but frankly i do enjoy the british music scene just as much as our talent here =D [mayhaps i could meet the arctic monkeys or china mieville!]

I don't think you'd need to travel as far afield from Edinburgh to start your band! Bristol is famed for its trip-hop (I do love Portishead and Massive Attack), but I don't think I've heard of another band come from Bristol since the late 90s. My advice to you is, if Edinburgh's own scene doesn't cut the mustard, take a trip to my beloved Manchester. It's a lot closer, and there's a scene for just about any genre. In fact, there's a great trip-hop band from my uni, named The TenderMachine, that you should check out. You'd probably have a better chance of meeting the Arctic Monkeys here than in Bristol too!
