- 'Squee' Gives You Dark and Scary Lulz!
-
Jhonen Vasquez is a GENIUS. A dark and twisted genius, but a cartooning genius nonetheless. Discovering Johnny the Homicidal Maniac played an unexpectedly important part in my angry teenage head - if someone could take the worst, bloodthirstiest fantasies out of your head, and turn them into something so sharp and so funny, then on some level they must be okay, right?
The only reason I didn't choose 'JtHM' over 'Squee' is that the humour is more frequently interspersed with Nny's musings on life, death and his crippling depression. 'Squee', the book that focuses on Nny's traumatised next-door neighbour, not only has a few more laughs in it, but also more strips - 'Meanwhile', 'Wobbly Headed Bob', and everyone's favourite, 'Happy Noodle Boy'.
This is humour at its very blackest. Some frames will make you grateful that they're drawn in monochrome. There's a lot of gore and nastiness and social commentary. But you will laugh for hours, not least because you'll realise that it's okay to let your little inner demons come out to play every once in a while. Or at least, you'll agree with Squee when he says "Shmee... I think there's something wrong with this world."
