There are dozens of little folded pieces of cardstock littering my workspace. Why? So I can cover up the window to (the rest of) the world that is my built-in webcam.
So when I see a FriendFeed post about Woopra’s “unique ability to display individual Web site visitors in real time” via their WEBCAM, my heart did a tiny palpitation.
The post comments read from a ‘Press Release’:
“Woopra, the world’s fastest growing Web Analytics provider, today announced that the next version of its wildly popular real-time Website monitoring application will allow users to remotely activate and view Website visitor’s built-in Webcams. Combined with Woopra’s unique abilities to display individual Web site visitors in real time and track them by name, this new technology levels the playing field by enabling companies and individuals alike to gain unprecedented visibility into user demographics and preferences.”
OMG! I fix my hair to visit the mailbox, I can’t imagine having face-to-ME interaction every time I want to check my Internet sites. No way!
The comments are great. My favorite being “I’ll counter this by starting to surf the web in the nude.” Wow, I imagine the porn industry is still doing well, but saturate the market with Woopra nudity videos and even Larry Flint will be living in his car.
Woopra even provides a nice embedded video demonstration, which I watched. I felt relief (and a little silly) at the ‘reveal’ in the end. But joke or not, I’m sill a little uncertain. Because you KNOW this is probably happening. Really. Not just as a clever April Fools joke. (so save that junk mail because it makes for great webcam covers)
