Track and Soccer(football) are huge worldwide. Sorta big here but no where the scale they enjoy across the globe. For the most part track events are individual, and if there is contact it's incidental. The need to beat on each other worked for me as an angry teen, kinda lost it's sparkle by my 41st B-Day.
The need to express yourself violently only works for really intelligent humans. Track requires a large amount of physical training, training, training and then some more. Absolute individual dedication*.

Of course we all know I'm referring to soccer and pit bulls
