I saw him at a fan-club Oscar Party in Hollywood in early 2002 when Fellowship Of The Ring won only 4 of the 13 Oscars it should have won. His entire entourage stopped by and spent over one full hour at our party before going to the official New Line party. At one point I was less than 6 feet from him. I was overwhelmed, and alas I didn't have the guts to walk up and say hello. However...
Richard Taylor (WETA-Digital)
On the same night that I saw Peter Jackson, I got to meet Richard Taylor. It was one of the bravest things I've ever done: I walked right up to him, while most people were fawning all over Mr Jackson, and simply told Mr Taylor "THANK YOU FOR GETTING IT RIGHT." I told him that Fellowship was a movie I'd been waiting for more than 20 years to see, and that there were no words to adequately sum up how moved I was by how perfectly produced the film's effects were. In response, the man shook my hand and told me how grateful he was for my appreciation. Here he was, holding his Oscar for Visual Effects, and he thanked me for believing in him. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Oh, and he let me hold it. Yes, I held the actual Oscar won by Fellowship Of The Ring for Best Visual Effects. It is a moment I will never forget.
