Money isn't bad or good, just as a hammer is neither bad nor good. Money is just a tool, and it can be used for good or banal or evil purposes.
Money isn't even a thing -- it's a concept. My dollars in the bank only exist as accounting entries. I can deposit a check, earn interest on the money, then write another check to someone -- all without touching any currency.
The problem isn't money, it's greed, and, yes, greed is at the root of many -- but not all -- evils. The quote is from the Bible, when the apostle Paul writes (in 1 Timothy 6:10): "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." Paul doesn't say that money is the problem; he says that greed leads some people to stray from the path and brings them unhappiness.
Instead of scheming for more, we would do better to appreciate how much we have already and to experience the warm feeling of generosity.
