• It's hard to apologize when it won't work
    • I don't mind apologizing when I'm wrong. I don't even mind saying I'm sorry when the other is at fault. If something I can say will make things better, if it makes life easier for everyone all round, not apologizing is not easier--it's wrong.
      Sometimes, though, the damage is too great to repair with a word or two, however well-meaning. Or it's too late.
      The pragmatist in me says that I shouldn't bother. It will be ugly, then it will be over, and no one will be the better for it. But that is not enough, and I know it. It may not repair what's wrong with the world, or even what is wrong with me, but it nudges the ballance in the right direction to speak the truth.
