  • If you had to lose one of your senses for a year, which one would it be? See all answers
    • As long as I could eat and read, I'd be ok.
    • Without taste or without smell, I'd find it hard eat much. Have you ever eaten while holding your nose? Most foods come into your mouth as a texture. You chew, and you change that texture, but without taste or without smell, that mushy glob of stuff in your mouth is pretty unappealing.

Without touch, I'd probably slowly go insane, if I didn't fatally injure myself first. Humans need to be touched. It's not something we are usually very conscious of needing, but if we go some time without being touched we are at serious risk of depression. Touch is also our feedback on our interaction with the world. How hard do I need to push this knife to get through this mango? Without touch, I might not notice that I also went through my hand. Did someone say "opportunity for infection?"

Losing my sight would severely change my life. No more driving myself where I want when I want. I'd have to find a different line of work. No more solo cycling or sailing; no more carpentry or chainsaw. Sure, I'd find ways to adapt. Computers are increasingly adaptable for the blind, and I can touch type, so fear not, Plinky reader. Still, losing my sight would mean substituting many activities for others, and hoping I enjoyed them as much.

Without hearing, I could make my way around the world. I could work, I could play, I could type Plinky answers. I could watch movies and TV with closed captions. I wouldn't be able to listen to my favorite music, except that I always have music playing in my head. The worst part of being stone deaf would be that I wouldn't be able to put on some music to drown out that brain worm "Billie Jean" loop.
