- I'd go without HEARING for a year
-
I like it when Plinky throws a prompt like this one at me... b/c it really made me think. Truth be told, my first thought was that I wanted to lose my "other" sense for a year -- my sense of greater awareness, perhaps what some people would call my "intuitive sense." But this prompt doesn't have an "other" radio-button so I was forced to think further... well-played, Plinky-people!
Here's my reasoning for why I'd choose to give up my hearing for a year...
When I was 10 years old, I was blind for almost 2 weeks due to an eye injury -- my eyes didn't stop working, but for medical reasons they had to be taped shut for 12 days. I'll never forget that experience; it is hard to put into words. The legend about how when one sense stops, the others make up for it... well, it's not true. Or rather, it's not true in the easy-to-understand way that most people believe. For me, the greatest difference I noticed was in my hearing... it's not that it became "better" per se, but it became more "focusable" ... when I heard something, it was like I could turn my eardrums toward it, intuitively, and explore the specific sound in more depth. Again, it's hard to explain. Anyway, given that I had such a profound experience with my hearing & sight, I'm left wondering whether the reverse would be true: if my hearing were blocked then would my sight change in some way?
