- 'House of Leaves' wasn't an easy read

This had to be one of the creepiest books I've taken on recently, surpassing even Stephen King. Disturbing in an unknown sort of way . . . the undertones of fear feed on you without coming out directly. But . . . I think this book is brilliant - in its format, its insanity, its play on our fears. Not only are you reading a book but there is writing in the margins as if you're reading someone's diary so you have to really work through and around this book . . . reason number one I haven't finished it yet. Reason number two I haven't finished it yet: it takes place in a normal suburban home . . . I started freaking out in my own house as I was reading this book! And I don't scare easily . . . Nor have I ever found any book "difficult" to read until this one. Give me War and Peace, Les Miserable, Dante's Inferno, Proust, Shakespeare, Rand, you name it - I've taken them all on, loved them and conquered them . . . this one, though, it just creeps me out and I'm bent on finishing it . . . in the daylight, at someone else's house.
