    • Removal of shoes is mandatory.
    • The first thing I do when I get home is take off my shoes...

Because I think wearing shoes in the house is gross. I live in the city, there's some nasty stuff on the ground out there! Of course, it does make me feel like an old person to force everyone to take off their shoes when they come in...

I never understood taking off shoes until I spent my undergrad years in Minnesota. It's just a common, logical there. Now, when I'm at friends' house and family settings, I always take off my shoes and people look at me weird.

I Grew up and worked on my family's farm, so taking of my shoes was instilled into me day 1.

It's just what all Canadians do, so I do. Wouldn't it be too messy to leave them on?

What I don't understand is why my wife can't take her shoes off at the door. They always end up in the middle of the floor. By the end of the week there are 5 pairs of shoes laying around.

I sometimes do, I sometimes don't. For me it's more of a comfort issue than a cleanliness issue (If I'm wearing heels or something like that, they definitely get removed first thing). Guests can keep them on. Part of it is maybe 'cause our entire house is pretty much all hardwood floors, plus the kitchen floor can get kinda messy, so shoes help keep feet clean. Or, y'know, I could also learn to be less messy in the kitchen, but that's kinda hard :)

I agree. Shoes off, then replace jacket with blue bathrobe. What? I live in a cold apartment in San Francisco.

Agree, I don't like cleaning my apartment, removing shoes keeps it cleaner for a longer time. :)Also, same as MikeMcG, in Canada you don't need to ask people to remove them, it' just obvious.

I take my shoes off out of courtesy. My feet don't smell, so I'm not hurting other people when I am a guest at their house. I can make sure I don't track in dirt or mud, and at my house, the shoe rack by the door sort of shows that shoe removal is encouraged. If they don't, it isn't the end of the world, but I'd like to think my guests have the courtesy and self-awareness to not walk into my house with dirty shoes. And if all else fails, I can say it's a racial/cultural thing, with me being Asian and all.
