• Spandex and High-top fades
    • If you were born in the 70's, you'll probably agree that the 90's was OUR time! Ahhh, the spandex dresses, high-top fade hair cuts, Cross Colors overalls, acid-washed jeans, political hip hop...those were the days!

For me, anyway, the early 90's were a combination of crazy fun, as well as exploring different thoughts, opinions and points of view.

I think I miss that balance in popular culture. Today's popular culture appears to be just dumbed down and selfish - with no counter thought to provide balance. I mean, back in the day we could throw our hands up to BBD's "Poison" one minute, and throw our fists in the air for Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" the next, and not be contradictory.

I guess everything must change. ..I still have my spandex dress, though. :)

I remember you. You were cool. I believe that is when the really big "cross-over" began with the nerdy white kids in the high schools. One of those nerdy white kids was my son. I was his aging hippie father. Suddenly one day he started talking like Malcolm X, but not as literate or well-spoken. One of my best friends and a felllow journalist who is famous and is an African American name Willliam Worthy used to stop by occasionally. We co-taught a journalism course. He was older than me, but Bill always wanted to know why this or that was happening. One day he heard my son talking his new talk and Bill just smiled. I said, "You think that's funny?" He said, "I didn't say it was funny, just sounds more normal to me."
