I'd give a baby blanket made out of polar fleece, and a few packages of those onesies in varying sizes so the baby will have lots of onesies to romp around in. This is what I usually give, and it works out well.

I'd also give the mom something... a little gift basket of nice-smelling creams or something. The mom needs something too!
