• Homemade Toffee
    • Here's how to make old fashioned, English-style Toffee. It's delicious!

Gather your ingredients to make Toffee.
      You need:

      1 cup of sugar
      1/4 cup of water
1 cup of butter (MUST be butter; none of that margarine stuff)
chocolate chips (bout a half cup to a full cup)
chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, peanuts, whatever; bout a half cup or so)

      You will also need:

GLASS Pyrex dish or candy molds made for hard candy, sticks if you're making suckers, candy thermometer, knife for spreading chocolate.

Heat sugar, butter and water to 300 degrees F.
Heat this slowly so you can follow how the rise in temperature. I'd recommend using the candy thermometer. If you don't have a candy thermometer, you can use the "cold water test". To do this test, take small samples of your toffee while it's still heating and drip a small amount into a cup of ice cold water. If it hardens immediately with wispy tails, then it's ready. Consult a candy cookbook for a better explanation...

Pour into molds or glass dish.
Pour the toffee (be careful, it's mega hot!) into your molds or glass dish. Let it set for a minute or so before going on to the next step; it will be plenty hot.

      Top the Toffee.
Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the candy. Wait for them to melt and spread them using the knife (I like to use a frosting knife; gets things nice and smooth).

After you've spread the chocolate, sprinkle your nut toppings on top.

      Break Toffee and package.
Break the toffee up into small pieces and package in an attractive tin (if you're giving it as a gift) or put into a well-sealed storage container. Enjoy your toffee! It tastes better than Heath bars any day of the week!
