- What I Like Most About My Job
-
What I like most about my job, is that I get to work outside with nature. I am a beekeeper, so I also get the chance to look into a world that few people will ever get to see and experience. I'm very fond of honey, I've loved it ever since I was a small child. When my sister and I where children and we ate pancakes and waffles, we used honey. Not until many years later, did we know that most folks use maple syrup on pancakes and waffles.
I think Honey bees are so amazing, I've always liked bugs. As a child I use to love to catch bugs; butterflies, lightning bugs, and yes honey bees. Growing up in the 70's honey bees where always present in the backyard. I couldn't hardly walk barefooted in the backyard, because I might step on a honey bee and receive her sting. I use to catch honey bees in empty mason jars with the lid full of holes, made my hammering nails into the lid and pulling them back out. Believe-it-or-not, my mother teased me and said, "your going to grow-up and become a beekeeper". Well, she got it partly right, I'm actually a full time Registered Nurse but my hobby/side business and what my family and I enjoy doing in our spare time the most, is beekeeping. I have what I believe to be an extensive knowledge on honey bees, bee biology, and their nutritional needs. I've read many books and beekeeping journals about honey bees, migratory beekeeping, beekeeping history, and beekeeping management. I've been keeping bees for more than 5 years now; and I have done everything beekeeping related from selling honey, removing feral honey bee colonies, to providing pollination services, I even make my own wooden ware. Beekeeping is very dynamic, management practices have undergone a massive overhaul, especially since the advent of colony collapse disorder, and I know I've still got some learning to glean from the honey bees. One day I do hope to keep honey bees full time, and become a commercial beekeeper but until then, I'll keep my day job and keep the bees alive, keep increasing number of colonies I have.
