If I had unlimited resources, I would create the same thing that I'm trying to create with limited ones, publishing my novel series and then turning around and making one or two of them into a movie. While I want to play the lead character, I am pretty certain that there are professional actors out there who look better and have better credibility to play the role. That aside, I want to direct the movie or at least be a part of the production crew beyond my role as writer.

I do have a little directing experience. And I do mean little. As part of an adult education class, I had the chance to direct three "live to tape" show for broadcast on a local community channel. We had three cameras, graphics, a teleprompter, and an audio board. Even though that experience happened more than ten years ago, I still remember the rush or seating in the center seat and calling the shots. At first, there was this feeling of power, which quickly turned into a sense of anticipation, excitement, and even a little dread. One of the shows, I was glad that we were doing live to tape and not live because I was not on my game and everything that could go wrong did. At one point during that taping, we were even accidentally on the live air for a few minutes.

The last of the three was textbook, even though I had only two camera operators for three cameras and the subject matter was crammed from the beginning to end, so there were absolutely no room for mistakes. During that show there was absolute precision after a minor false start. Everyone was hopping to and making things happen, even though there was a little swearing over the crew headsets and I was holding my breath on a couple of shots as a cameraman juggled two cameras.

Just writing about that memory, I feel the same sense of pride, accomplishment, and satisfaction that I felt after I called "That's a wrap" on that final show. I hope one day to feel those same feelings, and many more, when I take what's riding around in my head and transform it into a wondrous vision for all to see.
