- The universal word of....
-
It's simple, it's easy, and even babies use it.
It's not a word that would provoke an imediate response. It's a word you have heard before and when heard you may have thought the speaker just didn't know what to say.
I use it as a pause, to generate a thought, to enable the other speaker to continue, or just to let them know I'm listening. It's brief yet provides a lucrative body of meanings. Depending on my inflection it can even provide a dual purpose of exercising my stomach muscles.
It's simple, it's easy, and even babies use it. It is the verbal expression of my life's montra "question everything". You probably have used it several times today already. It's used in every language.
My hopes are that after reading this you will give more credit to the simple word of "hmm". Draw it out when you say it; speak it quick and fast focusing on those stomach muscles. It can be a question; it can be an answer; it can be agnostic. Whatever way it is used allow it to represent a different meaning each time it leaves your lips.
Hmm, now what? Hm! Not another 50 emails in 10 minutes! Hmmm, that's very interesting. Hm, hm, I see. Hm, hmmm, hmm, singing my favorite tune.
Now it's your turn.....how will you use it?

There I was sitting on my steps two feet away I saw an object blowing in the wind. It appeared to be a book with the wind blowing the pages from beginning to end. My first thought; what book is it? Now everyone in the neighborhood knows I'm the resident book worm, so I walked over with a bit of trepidation. You see, on my block, we love, we hate, we cry, and appreciate all the many aspects of who we are; it's a family. So like a family you must watch out for the practical joker as well.
I looked to my left then scanned to my right; no one in sight. I took the bait and picked it up. The first page I saw, I began to read.
He laughed, and then shot me a smile. "We had a deal, remember? I have a reason for being secretive."
I immediately dropped the book! Those words felt so surreal; the words felt like a voice in my head one of memory even though I couldn’t place it. I had a sense of peace, a feeling of knowing. I didn’t want this experience to end; until all of a sudden I was tapped on my shoulder. It was my neighbor Shawn who was looking at me with questioning eyes.
As he picked up the book and handed it to me he commented, "What's up Claire? What's up with the book...must be a hot topic since it jumped out of your hands."
I stumble over my words, remembering what I had felt, and replied. " Oh...um nothing special Shawn; it's just something I picked up."
His reply, "Well don't forget me..."
He laughed and then shot me a smile and began to walk away. Looking back over his shoulder he yelled, "We had a deal, remember? I have a reason for being secretive."
I had no reply. My only thought....is it you or déjà vu?

Don't let the cover fool you. It's not your typical romance novel....I hate those!
It was written in a time where communication meant talking to each other face to face or by handwritten letters. There was no email, cell phones, internet, or electronics.....sounds boring...well think again....do you like gossip....who doesn't even guys do. Do you like suspense, a scandel, seduction, a hero, and a please don't end ending? Then this is your book!
