My 3rd grade teacher was the best teacher I've ever had. 3rd grade was special because I was one of the "chosen." Adams Elementary, the school I went to, was not big enough to hold all of the kids in 3rd grade so they had to bus some of us to McDonald elementary. They picked 25 Adams Elementary 3rd graders and created a 3rd grade class at McDonald's for us. We would all meet at Adams in the morning and the entire class would be bused to McDonald every day. Our teacher was Miss Christensen.
She was young, probably in her twenties and I remember her being very pretty. She had the really cool flipped-back hair that was the style at the time. She was also really cool. Star Wars came out that year (Episode IV) and everyone was crazy about it (of course. I don't need to tell YOU that). As a surprise she had her husband build a spaceship reading lounge for the class. It was really amazing. I also remember one day, for reader's theater, we did a scene from Star Wars. We were so stoked. She really knew how to tap into what we loved and were interested in and teach us from that place. Because of this we all excelled and did very well that year.
This was the year that I wrote an essay called "What freedom means to me" and won an award for it! I still have the handwritten essay somewhere. I will try to find and share. When I rediscovered it as an adult I laughed until I cried because it was so hilarious.

- Favorite Park
-
Currently, my favorite park is Wildwood in Welches, Oregon. It is nestled in the foothills of the Mt. Hood National Forest. Foothills is kind of the wrong term. The "hills" are actually mountains in and of themselves but they are dwarfed by Mt. Hood. Wildwood is one of the most peaceful, magical places I have ever been. When I am there, wandering the boardwalk on the Wetland Trail, or hiking through the cedar forest, all of my troubles melt away. I go running there at least once a week.
The Salmon River cuts through it and is beautiful any time of year. My favorite times are when it is barely raining and there are wisps of fog that hover over the river.

- Summer Memory: eating raspberries in the garden
-
This is a memory that comes back to me again and again:
I am a young child, around 7 or eight years old. I am by myself in the garden of our house, next to the back yard. I am enjoying the summer heat. I am hiding among the raspberry bushes that my mom planted a few years ago. They are as tall as I am. I am eating raspberries and they are delicious. It seems like they are the most delicious thing ever. Made more delicious by the fact that I can enjoy them by myself with nobody around to bother me.

- Would you ever visit a psychic or palm reader?
-
I have actually done this. This is another New York Story. It was Earth Day in 1990. April 22nd. Oh, it was a fabulous day. A beautiful spring day in the Big City. I wandered around Central Park and Manhattan with my friends. In fact, this photo of the roller skaters was taken on this very day.
The day felt very magical. I remember there being lots of people wandering around Central Park. There may have been something going on (a free concert or something. I can't quite remember.) There was a powerful, wonderful energy in the air.
We walked by a sign for a psychic/palm reader and decided to to check it out for fun. We walked up to this apartment (which was very weird) and knocked on the door. There was a family of gypsies who lived there. The psychic, a middle aged woman, beckoned me into a back room and instructed me to hold out my palm.
My palm was beset with terrible eczema (I know. Probably TMI but it's true). The woman tried to read my palm but was so distracted by this that it dominated our conversation. Her advice to me was that I should take "Half a Valium everyday" and that would clear it up. I can't remember what she said about my future. I do remember that it involved finding the perfect man and marriage and the usual things 19 year old girls think about. The whole thing lasted about fifteen minutes and cost me twenty dollars. I was extraordinarily disappointed. I have never been to a psychic since.
