    • The Penny Debate
      • Seriously? I thought this was an April Fools joke when I first heard about it because anyone who's ever handled money would know who stupid getting rid of the penny would be.

First of all, there's the whole pricing psychology thing. This place charges $X.98, that one charges $X.97. Oh, and that one over there charges $X.99. Obviously a penny makes a difference.

And let's not forget sales tax! Even if prices were rounded up to the nearest dollar, here in MA that would mean 6.25 cents per taxable dollar. So if you don't have a debit card or pennies on hand, you're going to get some as change.

While I'm sure many of our lawmakers would leap at the chance to eliminate the penny, any taxpayer with a brain would fight it. We know that "rounding to the nearest 5 cents" really means "rounding UP to the nearest 5 cents" and that adds up quicker than a jarful of pennies!

    • My Favorite Movie Soundtracks
      • The prompt was to name a great movie soundtrack. I'm going to be generous and name two, because I'm old school and what constitutes as a soundtrack these days is definitely not the same as it was when I was younger.
Nowadays a soundtrack is usually a bunch of previously released songs thrown together. If the company responsible for the movie is willing to flip the bill we are treated to the original tunes. If not we get to hear our favorites, rerecorded by unheard of artists. Blech!
In this category I would give props to "Grown Ups", primarily because it's chock full of Geils, but also has a lot of other tunes I grew up with - and almost all by the original artists.
But, like I said, I'm old school. To me a true soundtrack is a collection of songs, or a score written specifically for the movie. My son loves the score to Tron: Legacy. I will admit it's one of the rare true soundtracks I've heard recently and I do like it, but the soundtrack to The Sting is the one that will always have a place in my heart.

    • What types of things do you avoid asking for help with?
      • As much as I would love to delegate, I pretty much avoid asking for help with everything.

You've heard the saying, "If you want something done right, you got to do it yourself"? I am stubborn, but I'm by no means a perfectionist. I'm just the type of person who wants their clean dishes, well, clean and their waste baskets before they start overflowing. And the only way to get these things this way is to do them myself.

About the only time I'll ask for help is when the cap on my bottle of Mountain Dew is on too tight.

    • My Top 3 Hobbies
      • Top 3 hobbies?
Well I think we all know my top one, crochet, though it's not really a hobby anymore. Sewing and crochet were the first two crafts I recall my mother teaching me. I loved sewing as a kid. Now, not so much. But crochet is forever!
My number two hobby would be writing. I love creative writing. I'd love it even more if my muses would cooperate, but there you go. I do a lot of fanfiction, in an effort to get my creative juices flowing, but someday I hope to write and publish an original novel. Perhaps a crochet mystery?
My third favorite hobby would be reading. Ironically I'm not a big reader of fiction, though I do have a few favorite stories. Instead I focus on non-fiction, gobbling up all the information I can on whatever subject I'm interested in, at the time. Needless to say, I love my Kindle.
So, tell me about your hobbies.

    • The Best Way to Cure a Cold
      • Vitamin Packaging

I get rid of my colds the good old fashioned way - I let nature take care of it.
        1. I get plenty of sleep. This gives my body both the energy and the downtime it needs to fight the infection. It also means less time awake, thinking about being sick - though those fever dreams can be very entertaining. :)
        2. I take my vitamins. Can't fight a war without the proper equipment, right?
        3. I take in plenty of fluids. Runny nose? Sneezing and coughing? Phlegm? That's all your body at work, trying to expel the nasties, and sufficient fluid intake aides your body in doing that.
I don't bother with cold medicines unless I really have to be somewhere. They don't make me feel any better and actually hinder the healing process.
