Keanu Reeves
We were walking up to the Pasadena Playhouse to see Fences starring Laurence Fishburne. My brother and then-boyfriend were talking animatedly and trailing my mom and I as we approached the Playhouse entrance, where people were sitting on the steps waiting, buying snacks, or wandering over from their parked cars. One stylishly besuited man was sitting on a window ledge with his head down, hands folded between his knees. Which is when I noticed his shoes. Um, his hiking boots. Which were jutting out into the sidewalk.

My mom and I walked past him. I was still wondering if he was leaned over like that because he was lamenting his inappropriate choice of footwear when I heard my boyfriend stumble and say, “sorry man, I didn’t see you there,” which elicited a “dude, it’s cool,” from a strangely familiar voice. I turned around to see Keanu Reeves, no longer hunched over, looking at us walk away. The boyfriend was all like, “Dude, I just tripped over Keanu Reeves.”

My boyfriend spent most of the next several hours trying to convince me that we should invite him over after the play, but we ultimately decided not to because where would that go? Keanu Reeves would sit on our couch, emit a lengthy “whoa” and then we’d all stare at each other until the uncomfortable silence was broken by someone saying something inane about The Matrix.
