- Soundtrack of summer
-
The most traditional summers I ever spent were with my mom's family in rural Michigan. The soundtrack of which still plays in my mind...
My family there aren't big 'grill-out / BBQ' kinda people... so one of my favorite sounds (sizzling of food on the grill) wasn't very common. The summer-in-michigan sounds that I hold fond are:
the "swishish" of the breeze running through the cornfields
the "crunchslurp" of biting into a wedge of watermelon
the "zzzzPoP!" of the mosquito zapper
the "clickssssshhh" of an ice-cold canned/bottled beverage being opened
the "eeepEeepEeep" of crickets hiding in the shadows
the gentle "crwereeeek" of the porch swing as we swayed in the warm summer evenings
the "clap!-twist" of metal lids on the jars that captured fireflies live in and the tinkling laughter of kids chasing them....
sigh, there's nothing like a summer on the farm!

- THE Television Show I Didn't Expect to Like
-
Don't have long to write about this because "cyabz ah hea-yah", and I've got to get a workout in before hitting the clubs tonite...
When I first heard about The Jersey Shore, I was appalled by the description - it sounded like an embarrassing car crash of a show.
Then I watched it -- all my worst fears came true! Trashy girls, cheesy meathead guys whose sole meaning in life is drinking & having sex. Which by no means are unimportant in life ^_^, but should not be your raison d'être.
Of course I had to watch a few more episodes to confirm these fears and better understand the GTL phenomenon and other 'shore slang' such as creepin', grenade, Guido, and DTF.
Next thing I knew, I was hooked. (insert fist pump here)

- Top 3 Historic Events I've Experienced
-
So much has happened over the past 40 years - hard to pick just 3...
I'll go backwards, I suppose -
Age 38 - First African American President of the United States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama_2009_presidential_inauguration
Age 26 - Death of Princess Diana of Wales
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Diana,_Princess_of_Wales
So much controversy had surrounded Diana - and frankly her courtship and marriage was also quite an historical event, but her death was pure tragedy.
Age 15 - Challenger Explosion & death of teacher Christa McAuliff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger_disaster
It still makes me emotional to think of it - we watched the launch and crash in class because of the Teacher in Space Program.
Deaths also standout as Historical events and Rockstar deaths in my lifetime have been epic as they included: Kurt Cobain, Jerry Garcia, and Michael Jackson. Of course this was not all of the rockstar and certainly not all of the Celebrity deaths in my life - but I have specific memories related to the day they each happened.

- Bad Habits that Need to Go
-
Staying up too late has always been a bad habit. There are always so many things to do - and there's never enough time...
I always believed I could get away with 5-6 hours of sleep until I saw a TEDtalk by Ariana Huffington about how the key to success is sleep.
Watch the TEDtalk here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nncY-MA1Iu8
When you see a talk like that - how could you not want to get more sleep?!
.....zzzzzzzzzz

- Is Chivalry Dead?
-
Dictionary.com defines chivalry as:
chiv·al·ry
/ˈʃɪvəlri/ [shiv-uhl-ree] -noun,
the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms.
Some days when I take BART or the bus and I see teenagers and men all around me in seats while I stand, the question of chivalry does come to mind. Then again, I've never been much of a feminist in the sense that men and women are absolutely equal. However, I do believe each gender has its unique and special strengths.
The city I live in, San Francisco, is intensely diverse. My fellow citizens are varied in sexuality, race, social classes, and I've noticed that younger generations seem to have been brought up under more self interested ideals. This diverse cultural and societal mix makes standardizing rules for etiquette so much more difficult.
Being human and being kind, however, should not be dead. Common courtesy dictates not to drop the door closed in front of another person. If someone on the bus has a load of things they're carrying, I think they should be offered a seat. It should be natural to respect our elders and offer them our seats when we can.
Chivalry shouldn't be dead, and it shouldn't be a commentary on gender related interactions - but about courtesy & generosity. We should ALL be chivalrous and kind to one another.
