i am NOT a night owl. i don't like being 'active' at odd hours of the night during the week (like my weird upstairs neighbors who have all-out, loud conversations about, like, groceries, at 3 in the morning on a wednesday). unless i'm partying or just enjoying a night out on the weekend, i don't like being out of the house in the wee hours of the morning.

BUT, i cannot fall asleep before midnight unless i'm sick (which is not too often, thank god).

AND, i HATE getting up early, BUT once i'm up, i really enjoy being up early.
like i said: don't try to understand it. i love the quiet and solitude of the early morning. i enjoy having time to listen to npr's 'morning edition' and have a cup of coffee before all of the activities of the day begin. yeah, i may hit the snooze button 2, 3, or 4 times before i'm actually up, but i remind myself how much i enjoy the morning peace, and force myself to do it.

If you were born in the 70's, you'll probably agree that the 90's was OUR time! Ahhh, the spandex dresses, high-top fade hair cuts, Cross Colors overalls, acid-washed jeans, political hip hop...those were the days!

For me, anyway, the early 90's were a combination of crazy fun, as well as exploring different thoughts, opinions and points of view.

I think I miss that balance in popular culture. Today's popular culture appears to be just dumbed down and selfish - with no counter thought to provide balance. I mean, back in the day we could throw our hands up to BBD's "Poison" one minute, and throw our fists in the air for Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" the next, and not be contradictory.

I guess everything must change. ..I still have my spandex dress, though. :)

Hands down, my TV guilty pleasure is the Golden Girls. This relatively hip, modern, 30-something urban black girl who has nothing in common with 60-something white women in Miami loves her Golden Girls.

Still, believe it or not, I see a little of myself in all four characters.

I can't go to bed without at least 2 episodes, and believe it or not - watching the show surely lifts my mood when I'm feeling down.

The cast is charming and has such natural chemistry with one another. It's obvious they all came from the performance school of thought that any actor worth her salt needed to cut her teeth in theater, dance and voice to be successful.

I just wish I wasn't on crutches at the time so I could have enjoyed the beach. As it was, I had to enjoy it from the balcony of my luxury hotel suite!

As a former journalist who still holds print news in a special place in her heart, I'd be remiss if I did not list newspaper as my preferred medium. Contrary to what everybody's saying, newspapers are not dying: it's CONVERGENCE that is killing newspapers. After all, the print journalist do the interviewing, the researching, the writing -- all the footwork. The other media pretty much reprint what's already been published in newspapers.

And if one more person says the Internet is killing newspapers, I'm going to scream! Where do you think news on the 'net comes from? Print journalists! The news doesn't write itself online!

This book helped me see how difficult we tend to make the simplest solutions to our lives' situations. Whenever I find myself up at night worrying about what I could have said or done differently earlier that day, or about what I might do or say tomorrow, this book helps me stop and remind myself to remain in the present. The Buddha taught this centuries ago, and Eckhart Tolle brought his teachings to the 21st century!
