- The Giving Tree still makes me want to kick that little boy

That tree was such an enabler! Had he gone to therapy he would have learned how abusive the little boy was, and might have felt empowered by the environmentalist movement!
Seriously though, I love this book. Its bittersweet and full of emotion that you get even as a very young child. I think it was a huge part of how I learned to frame empathy.

Have a sense of humor
If you can't laugh at what is happening, you're doing it wrong.
Be kind. Even when its much more satisfying to be a bitch
When you're in the moment its so easy to be snarky and make comments that put you in a better light. Sadly, this gets you nothing but a hurt partner (and a good story to tell at coffee with your girlfriends).
Honesty, usually.
Its a relationship, not a deposition. If something can be changed in 5 min (spinach in his tooth, a shirt that doesn't match) then 100% honesty works. If its not something that can be fixed in 5 min (big ol zit on your nose or the dreaded 'do i look fat in this' once you have left the house) then let it go.
The challenge is the in between moments, the things that can't be changed with laundry, but that make us better people. That is when you tread gently and make sure to let your partner know you're on their side, cheering them on as they work toward being a better version of themselves.
Fill up the eff-ing ice cube trays
This isn't hard. It might prevent me from killing you in your sleep.
Hold hands
It feels nice, it reminds you to stay connected and his hands are usually warmer than mine.
