I thought when I got my first real salaried job and moved into my own place that I was grown up, but no. All these things made me feel grown up: buying my first car, signing the papers on my first house, taking a trip to Ireland on my own, getting a great job at a cool company & moving from Texas to San Francisco... but really, no.

When my mom died was when I felt both grown up and too young to be this grown up. But still, most of the time I feel like I'm playing at being a grown up.

My first job: office worker at a tiny water company

I worked in the office of a rural water company with my cousin. The boss was a jerk, the office was barely air-conditioned, and the whole place (and the field work guys) always smelled like cheap cigarettes and grime. I mostly filed and made copies. We were directly under where all the planes come in to land. Very boring, but at least I wasn't working outside in that god-awful heat.
