      • Small Town Life

An old person on the bench

The town I grew up in is very small. There are about 2000 people living here. I was born here and still live here and that has been for 60 years.

It is so small everyone knows each other very well. So even if you catch a cold the whole town knows about it. That is a very good thing in some ways. For instance if something bad happens to you or your family, say a car accident, everyone offers to help. And I mean everyone. Now that is a bad thing if your favorite uncle gets drunk and makes an a_ _ out of himself. Then the whole town has that information to throw at you. So you see there are some drawbacks living in a small town, but the good far outweighs the bad.

Leonard,Texas is the little town I live in. It is about a 45 min. drive northeast of Dallas.

Large stores and movie theaters are a 45 mile round trip. So mostly that is a weekend journey. If you have heard it said (they roll up the sidewalks at 5pm) well that is the way things go here. Although we do have one convenience store open until 11pm. Whow isn't life grand. You can't get much better than that!!!

We're so small there is'nt a traffic light or even a caution light. You just have to hope everyone can see the stop sign.

    • Talking Versus Texting: My Preference
      • If I had to chose one form of communication it would be talking over texting.

        Now the Old Man

Talk or text? Believe it or not I don't know how to text. I have not tried it and I am sure I would not like it. You need to know that I am getting sort of old. Walking around with a cell phone in my hand, constantly poking at it, is not my idea of a fun thing to do.

Talking on the phone is a real pain in the _ _ _ for me. I can't hear as well as I did when I was younger. So talking on the phone is hard for me and I am sure it is not very pleasant for the person I am talking with. I constantly have to ask the person to repeat parts of the conversation.

By now your likely thinking, why don't you learn to text you old fool? I don't blame you for thinking that and you are right. I suppose texting would solve my hearing problem and learning it would be easy enough. My problem is I don't own a cell phone. Now your thinking, this guy is not only deaf but he's crazy too. Actually I have'nt felt the need for a cell phone, because I seldom leave my home.

So, for communication, my preferences are email or facebook. Oh,by the way, I do own a phone but basicly it just sits on the counter.

    • A Recent Epiphany
      • Good things happen for stupid people like me!

Believe it or not I have been sitting here trying to think of a recent "Aha" moment to share with you. Now you need to know I have not been at Plinky very long. Also I am a new writer with no experience.

So I'm sitting here staring at the screen and I notice, for the first time, the arrows on each side. Well I click on one arrow and to my surprise I'm taken to another promt. As I click back and forth it comes to me, "Aha."

    • If I Had One Hour in a Time Machine...
      • I got your back Ceasar!

I think going back to Bibical times would be interesting.Maybe all the way back to the time of Moses.Especially when he parted the Red Sea.I would love to see how he pulled that one off.
Also stop by Rome and watch the gladiators go at it.While I am in the neighborhood I would take in the chariot races as well.
Last but not lest I would pay a visit to old Ceasar. Also tell him to keep an eyeball on Brutus and he is not to be trusted.
Actually I think my time period is a little off here, but it was fun to play.

    • My Ancestors' Stories
      • I never got to know my great grandfather. The stories about him told how good a man he was. Just wish I could find out who killed him and why.

I would be very interested in knowing who murdered my great grandfather. Since he was alone at the time it has never been known.
My great grandparents moved from Missouri to Texas somewhere around 1888. A short time after arriving in Texas,"Pop" had to return to Missouri on unfinished business.
The only means of travel then was on horseback or wagon. So Pop chose to ride his horse. As he was traveling alone it would be much faster.
Somewhere in Missouri he was shot from his horse and left to die. The killers or killer where never found and known only to God.
