A movie that traumatised me as a child was one where the lead character (Gregory Peck) has a phobia about seeing sets of parallel lines against a white background. I found something chilling about simple images (fork marks on a table cloth - the design on bedsheets) setting off a traumatic reaction. The causes of this paranoia is only clear at the end. It was only years after first seeing the movie (from behind the sofa) at the age of about seven that I identified it as Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound. This movie is also famous for the fact that it features a dream sequence by Salvador Dali.

    • I like it hot
      • Outdoor swimming

I hate the four seasons in one day of British weather which is one of the reasons I now live in Italy. It took me a few years before I understood that I didn't have to strip off and worship the sun as soon as it appears - here it sticks around, sometimes even for longer than you want.
There are disadvantages of mosquitoes and muggy nights but these are irritations I can put with.
Now when I return to the UK, the cooler weather is more of a novelty than a sources of frustration.

      • Condoms.

A woman once left two messages on my answering machine. In a sexy voice, the first named a time and place to meet. In the second she just said "Bring condoms!". I was tempted to go but bottled out - I had visions of being beaten to a pulp and robbed rather than getting shagged.
