        Nothing. I always have to answer the question 'what are you superstitious about'? By saying nothing. Then I have to touch my nose three times. Touch the floor. Spin round four times clockwise.

    • Sliced and salted he watched me eat it

      • In Turkey in '87 a man approached me and beckoned me to follow him. I was young. Scared. I'd just slept in the street and was emerging blinking, clutching my pack tightly to my chest. He took my hand, led me a short distance and bought me a cucumber. Sliced and salted he watched me eat it. No words passed between us. And then he was gone, as quickly as the sun rising behind the blue mosque. But it left a feeling of hope deep in my belly that I still feel today.
