- The Worst Teacher I Ever Had
-
My grade 8 teacher was by FAR the worst. He would always stop lessons to give us motivational talks about life. He was a high school teacher prior to coming to our school, so maybe he had seen a lot of degenerate kids and wanted to make sure we didn't end up the same? Who knows.
I guess at first we thought it was kind of cool "Mr.K doesn't make us do annnny work, its sweeet!". Then his talks started to get repetitive, and then somewhat boring....by the end of the year, enough was enough.
Fast Forward to high school (grade 9 math especially).
One day myself, and all of those people who I had graduated with realized that we had actually learned pretty much nothing to help us in our academic high school career....looking back it was a hige waste of time, and I did REALLY bad in for at least the first 2 years. Those who had coming from neighbouring elementary schools had totaly different knowledge of things in math and science (etc...) that we all didn't have..
MInd you, we all probably had a lot of "advice" and "motivation" we could spread to others....but in reality, his advice MUST have sucked, because I don't remember any of it now.
p.s. my mom later confessed that she thought this particular teacher was hot. EWWWWW,..and btw he had coffee breath..oh Mr.K. What a horrid teacher you were...

"Carpe Diem" - Horace (latin poet, for those who arent familar!)
Translation - Seize the day. (or at least thats my translation, because the almighty Wikipedia had a lot of other words being thrown around in the definition...
I wish more people would live by this motto. Just drop all your stress and do whatever makes you happy for the day. Its kind of a litle bit of a Buddhist philosophy now that I'm thinking about it....the only thing that really matters is right now. Past and Future have no relevance to what is NOW, so why not seize that only moment known as the present, and do the best you can with it!
P.S. Love this motto so much that I tattoed it on my back....but often I forget its there, kind of wish that I had it somewhere that I would be able to see it on a daily basis and remind myself to seize my day (however, I do enjoy encouraging others!)

- Oh My, This Is Awkward
-
Rebecca always had a love for politics, although she wasn’t really aware of it at the time, her passion for being involved in school council matters, was indeed going to influence her decision to get a degree in Political Science in the future. In her Grade 11 year, Rebecca felt as though she was at the top of her game, friends with a lot of different people, a good boyfriend, and confidence that other girls probably envied. The opportunity arose for school elections, and Rebecca decided to take a gamble and run for school president, it would definitely be a great way to finish of the high school career!
After applications were submitted, the running candidates were announced. Much to Rebecca’s surprise, there were only two others who were running against her. One of who even if she were to spend hours gazing through school yearbooks, she would still not be able to tell you their name, and the other, was Carolyn.
Carolyn was a year younger than Rebecca so at first glance, Rebecca still had confidence that she would be able to win the most votes with a breeeeeze. However, the further into elections that they got, Rebecca started to notice that Carolyn actually had a couple of advantages; she was a popular cheerleader, and a great public speaker. Popular cheerleader aside, Rebecca still wasn’t a great public speaker, despite her drive to be so involved in school matters. She figured that this would be something she could acquire over time especially if awarded a position which would require a significant amount of public speaking.
As Election Day approached, Rebecca recruited many people to help paint and hang posters, and tried her hardest to talk to the school populous to try to figure out what the best approach to winning the most votes would be. Rumours leaked about candidates speeches, and as it turned out Rebecca’s was the only one which didn’t involve a lengthy introduction of some sort of side talent (i.e.; dancing, singing, etc.,). Rebecca knew that there was no way she would be able to throw anything together that would be of comparison to the other candidates in a matter of days, so she decided to stick to her gut and her original speech. Deep down inside, she had a feeling though, that this whole thing was maybe a bad idea. There was no sense backing out now, so soon before the day.
Election Day was finally here, and Rebecca was sure to be well prepared and remain confident during the morning as the hours approached closer to the time of her much awaited speech. She went around to her friends, reminding them to stop into the gym to catch the whole show, and then to be sure to vote during last period. Lunch time came, and it was time for speeches. Rebecca waited on the side of the stage behind the curtain and peered out into the crowd. The bright stage lights almost seem as though you were talking to a blank wall, as you could not really make out particular faces in the crowd, but occasionally you would see the glisten of someone’s glasses. This seemed to intimidate Rebecca even more, as if not knowing the initial reaction to people’s faces as she spoke would leave her somewhat clueless as to the response she would be able to draw from the crowd.
The speeches started, and there were a lot to go through, as there were also some for other positions such as secretary, community relations, etc., finishing with the top position of school president. Rebecca was second to go, after the first person (whose name has still not been plucked from memory..) and finishing after her would be the much anticipated Carolyn. Rebecca was sure to have someone in the audience film her debut, so that when she returned home with the glory of winning she would be able to share the special moment with all those who missed it.
It was Rebecca’s turn and she stepped onto the stage and behind the podium, adjusted her glasses and looked outwards to the crowd. “Oh....Shit....” was pretty much all that had crossed her mind. You could see more of the faces once you were on the crowd. And it wasn’t like talking to a blank wall as Rebecca had thought, in fact, she could see peoples faces and reactions as she stood and spoke...and it was not what she was expecting, nor did it encourage her to keep going. In fact, it scared her even more, causing her to leave out parts to her speech, and not talk in the comfortable suave and humourus way that she had. It was all just really awkward, really embarrassing, and enough to almost throw Rebecca into tears as she left the stage. People from the crowd were looking at her as if to say, “Who are YOU?! And what are you doing here?....”, it was almost like you could hear the laughs being held back.
After Rebecca left the stage, she felt a way she had never felt before. She had figured she would leave the stage with a renewed sense of confidence in herself, but almost the exact opposite was true. She felt more empty than ever, and ashamed that she had even attempted. Especially since Carolyn, who was quick to the stage after her, had a speech and performance that amazed the crowd of students and even faculty, to the point where, it didn’t even matter if the two prior candidates had said anything good at all, all that mattered was the spectacle which was Carolyn, that had just been on the stage.
Needless to say, about 2% of the people Rebecca had asked actually came out to support, and about the same amount of people even voted. I guess, in high school, there is so much else you can be doing during lunch than filling your time with “petty” politics. This translated into the votes at the end of the day. It wasn’t really a surprise to Rebecca when Carolyn was named President. Maybe if her friends were more involved than she could have had a better chance.
After Election day, there was only a couple of weeks left in school, and Rebecca remembers feeling like everyone was staring, and of course comparing her speech to Carolyn’s. It was truly the most awkward time, and since it seemed to push some people further away from her (because she was now labelled as weird and awkward..) she decided that instead of travelling 20 minutes to school, she would transfer for her last year to the new high school to where she had moved. It would just be easier that way, a fresh start. She wouldn’t have to live in such an awkward shadow of Carolyn, and end up being dubbed as “the other girl last year.” Even if this did happen after she left the school, at least she didn’t have to hear about it....
