I'm 24 and I Still Don't Make My Bed
I do wish that I could remember my dreams.
I always awake with a sense that the dreams of the night before were very exciting and full of action. But all that remains in my early morning head is a vague impression of what went on.
I can't help feeling that my inability to recall my dreams means that I am potentially losing a treasure trove of material that would be perfect for plotting the novel that I still haven't quite got around to writing...

- Afternoon tea at dolittles
-
For as long as I can recall, I have dreamed of opening a tea room.
I would call my tea room 'dolittles' and the emphasis would be on afternoon tea with delicious homemade cakes and pastries. Tea would be served in mismatched vintage china in shades of eau de nil, duck egg and lavender; the cakes would be brought to the table on tiered stands and eaten using delicate silver cake forks. Starched white cloths and fresh flowers on each table would be de rigueur. The staff would dress in a uniform of black with white aprons carrying the dolittles monogram.
The decor would be very much in the style of the 1920s and 1930s. The walls of the tea room would be covered in luxe wallpaper in a muted colour scheme. One or more chandeliers would hang from the ceiling and mirrors would abound, bouncing light off the spotless silverwear. Nothing chintzy though. My vision is for cool, sophisticated elegance.
Cole Porter and Gershwin classics would play in the background. Perhaps I might even hire a pianist and my customers would be encouraged to waltz and foxtrot around the parquet floor. dolittles would definitely be the hot spot to take afternoon tea.
On no account whatsoever would anyone be able to get coffee to go in a hideous styrofoam cup. There are other establishments out there for people who want that kind of thing...
As I write about it, I feel that my tea room is beginning to come to life. Perhaps one day I'll finally have the nerve to make dolittles a reality.

Volcanic Eruption Eyjafjallajökull
Never underestimate the power of a volcano to mess up your well-laid travel plans.
Snow is my usual travel worry but the 2010 eruptions of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano caught me out big time. My volcano-associated woes included a missed flight to Boston and an unscheduled overnight stay in Paris. Not as glam as it sounds - I was already at CDG airport when my flight was cancelled. Grr!

- Book recommendation: The Snowman by Jo Nesbo

It seems that Nordic crime writers are currently flavour of the month. My personal favourite is Norwegian author Jo Nesbo. I recently read 'The Snowman' and couldn't put it down. Very creepy indeed...

- Today's news is tomorrow's chip paper

The only print newspaper that I regularly read is 'Metro' - given out free to commuters in several UK cities every weekday morning. I read it from front to back, an exercise that generally takes up most of my train journey.
When I'm visiting my parents, I like to read the glossy magazines that come with the Sunday papers. As an aside, I also enjoy the free weekly magazine 'Stylist'. Like 'Metro', this publication is handed out at UK railway stations and airports.
I am rather partial to the sports section of the newspaper. I used to pore over the baseball scores when I lived in the USA. Now it's more likely to be football, cricket or rugby.
However, most of my news consumption these days comes from Twitter. I have a very short attention span, so news in 140 characters suits me well.
