- I'll once again read 'Gulag Archipelago'
-
I read Solzhenitsyn's exhaustive 3 volume work on the GUlag, Glavnoye Upravleniye ispravitelno - trudovyh Lagerey, the Soviet adminstration for labor camps operated from 1918-1956 in the summer of 1973, the year it was published in the West. It was difficult for me to process this book for many reasons, however I feel it was a valuable beacon to remind us all that within society infectious, systemic structures can be created and are very difficult to destroy. With all the changes in our world today now would be a good time to revisit Solzhenitsyn and the GULag, so as not to forget that dark sides can prevail if left unchecked.

- Lessons of life with a wild animal
-
Growing up we were put in the position of raising a bobcat from birth. Yes, we needed leather gloves to bottle feed it, but that was not a requisite due to bad behavior, just sharp claws. Sharing our lives with an animal that was feared by most could only be described as enriching. Lessons were learned then, that I still apply today in dealing with the behaviors of those I come in contact with. Its' name was Kitty. I remember calling Kitty, hearing it clump down the hall on a full run, slipping and sliding into the kitchen to the great surprise and awe of those who had not yet met. Although Kitty held great potential to cause damage, it never did. It was only filled with affection and loyalty, so when confronted with an individual's behavior that poses a threat I think back to how we communicated with our beloved Kitty, before I respond.

- 1421 The Year China Discovered America is long, but it's worth the read
-
To a great degree history of the Americas, as presented in the North American educational system has been done so from the point of view of the European influence. This book brings to light the early Chinese influence brought to the Americas upon large flotillas. An interesting and informative read.
