The magazines I read (Hint: It's not Playgirl [anymore])

ReadyMade
I'm the worlds worst crafter - I can't cut anything in a straight line, I can't measure anything correctly, I have a low patience where if something doesn't look perfect I throw down whatever I'm working on and walk away. And yet I totally love this magazine.

I heard they moved the magazine from Berkeley, CA to Iowa, thereby instantly losing it's hip credo. RIP, ReadyMade.

Hyphen
Hyphen Magazine is a non-profit Asian American magazine. It's an artsy high-brow magazine about cultural and activist issues which I never, EVER read, even though I'm a regular subscriber. But it makes me feel like I'm supporting the Asian community. That makes me a shitty Asian, doesn't it?

Real Simple
Because I'm apparently a 40 year old woman. I don't subscribe to this magazine, so I secretly hide the mag behind a Wired to read this behind a Barnes & Noble. (That's right! When I was 16 it would have been a Playgirl, and now it's a Real Simple. God, I'm beyond lame.)

It seriously does not help that Cancun Taqueria in the Mission - one of the best burrito places in the Bay Area - is less than a block from my house.

If I've had a fairly terrible day, I have been known for getting a super carnitas burrito and then bring it to my neighbor Laurie's, slowly rocking back and forth while I talk about how terrible my day was.

We call them "stressitos." Stressitos are delicious with extra avacado and sour cream, I'm just saying.

I recommend checking out The world's busiest intersection in Shibuya when you're in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan

So there's this intersection in Shibuya which is a six way intersection. And then when the light goes green, there are approximately 45 seconds of people walking EVERYWHERE. Walking through, walking around. There's a Starbucks on the second floor of one of the corners, and I pretty much chilled in the window and people watched for an hour and a half while all the salary men and cosplayers and housewives and teenage girls and drunk Brits were on their way doing whatever.

Pretty awesome.

My first job: office work

I did office and IT work for a company in Richmond that handles the travel plans of high school jazz bands, when they're good enough to travel the world. I got paid $8 an hour, which was crazy money for 1992.

The experience was mundane enough, but the thing that has always stuck was my boss, who was 450 pounds. That is not an exaggeration. 5'9" or 5'10", 450 pounds. He was nice enough; spoke fluent Japanese, obviously intelligent. But when you are sixteen years old and you work for a 450 pound man it's bound to make a permanent impression. The only time he yelled at me was when I had to go into a Taco Bell to get food for the both of us and I got a jumbo Coke instead of a diet Coke. (He'd need an awful lot of diet cokes, in hindsight.)

The last day of work, I left him stranded on the road when his car broke down and I elected to walk the rest of the way home, leaving him stranded out of his act of goodwill.

Wow, I'm kind of an asshole, now that I think about it.

This is actually a fantastic pop rock song. Even though it's completely overplayed on 92.7, this should have been just as big as "Since U've Been Gone," and there's not a trace of irony to that statement.

In defense of my vice: smoking

Smoking is one of those vices that you pick up if you're an Asian kid and you go to a public University in California. As horrible as that is to say, it's totally true -- it's right up there with liking terrible love ballads, buying decals to put on the back of your Honda Civic and only hanging out with other Asian kids.

I had also started going to raves. Methol cigarettes feel good when MDMA is coursing through your brains, and there you go.

I'm now an on-again, off-again smoker. I quit smoking when I left for Canada two years ago. I came back when the job in Vancouver fell through and my parent's divorce finalized. I quit again two weeks ago, but only because I was coughing going to sleep every night. That said, I'll still smoke if I'm drinking and there's a pack of cigarettes in my car. So we'll see.
