Communication
It's a fact – if something is wrong and you just can't open up to the other person and lay it all on the table, the relationship isn't going to last. It's vital to be able to discuss both minor and major topics, from the weather to what you're feeling. If you can't really talk to your partner, there isn't a real relationship there.
Keep the flame alive
There has to be desire, lust and passion always. With time that gets hard, but that's just when imagination has to make itself present. Change is good; change keeps things interesting.
No cheating
Even though the relationship might get quite boring at times and some other person might seem much better than the one you're stuck with... Don't cheat. Deception is brutal. Try talking to your partner about how things could be improved and make the relationship interesting again. If your urges are that uncontrollable, simply split up with your partner – spare them the pain of betrayal.
Freedom
You may be a couple, but you're still two separate and different individuals. You don't have to together all the time; some time apart makes you miss the other person and realise just how you actually like them. Going out on a Friday night separately, each one with their respective group of friends is absolutely healthy!
Respect
Respect is essential to every relationship, and a romantic one is no exception. It's fundamental to respect your partner's wishes, the limits they impose and their privacy.
