During one summer in the late 1980s, a few years after college graduation, one of the fellahs was working as a DJ in the nightclub at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Stamford, CT. As part of the gig, the hotel provided him with free room and board. His girlfriend at the time was an au pair from England whose friends, not surprisingly, were also au pairs.

That 4th of July he hosted a cookout that consisted of me, three or four of the other fellahs, and 12–14 au pairs hailing from England, Ireland, Sweden, and various other European points of origin. Being true ambassadors of international goodwill, we introduced them to the time-honored, all-American traditions of Frisbee, volleyball, outdoor grilling, watermelon seed spitting, and ice cold adult beverage consumption. It was one of the rare times in my life when I felt like beer commercials really do come true.
