    • Explaining Overseas Aid
      • I worked for a Christian non-governmental humanitarian organization named World Vision of Canada. Something most people don't understand about giving aid to the poorer countries of the world is that when WV goes into an area of need, they consult with the community to see the greatest need. Sometimes it is famine caused by lack of tools to do proper farming; sometimes it is the fact they have to travel miles each day to get water and need a well to be dug; sometimes it is housing. If it is a long-term project goals are set. Sometimes the work is determined to be developmental and so that's what the funds are used for. In other cases it is determined that child sponsorship is the way to help the community.

When a donation is given for child sponsorship the money does not go 'just' to that child but the combined donations are used to help that child plus contribute to the needs of the community, such as digging a well. So in other words that child is not singled out as the only recipient of help, but the family and community. However the relationship between a child and their sponsor is a definite benefit to seeing how the sponsorship is helping both the child and the others. Some people think that if they give money, it is given perhaps to the government of the country and they distribute it, but that is not the case with World Vision and most other NGO's (Non-Government Organizations). The donations and projects are directly given and overseen by World Vision.

Of course when there is a disaster there is Emergency Relief and Response given immediately especially when people are needing food and shelter.
