- If I Saw Someone Stealing...
-
Sad that this question is presented as an actual quandary, isn't it? All of the people who think stealing is OK, because it's 'only' a small item, or because the owner is 'rich' or 'won't miss it', or for any other reason, please find an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and form your own special community. (And, let's agree here not to bring up the tried-and-true argument of the starving man and the loaf of bread. I think the question posed is not about anything like desperation.) I have been a shop owner; I have been the person who points out the shoplifter to store personnel, I have been the person whose wallet has been stolen, I know people whose homes have been ransacked by thieves. No good comes from any of this. I believe honesty and decency are beautiful constraints on our lives. People who are hurting should openly and honestly ask for help. And when there is need, decent people share what they have.

- First Impressions
-
I want to see the person's face brighten when we are introduced. It can reflect friendliness, attraction on some level, an interest in me personally, or a general interest in making new acquaintances. If I don't see that small uptick in tension in the face, or a spark in the eyes, I know instantly that there are many other things more deserving of the next 2 minutes of my life than is this person, and my perfunctory hello is followed by a quick retreat. Life is too short, get out of my way!!!

- Somaly Mam!

I give it to the Somaly Mam Foundation. Stop human trafficking and sex slavery!! Somaly Mam was, herself, a child sex slave, sold by her grandfather. She eventually escaped and now rescues and offers education and rehabilitation to other child sex slaves. A great woman!!

- Wild Encounter with Some Kind of Animal
-
One summer I accompanied a scientific excursion into the Sierra foothills, to census feral pigs in the area and assess their impact on the environment. Daytime temperatures exceeded 100 degrees. We were staying in an old, abandoned homesteader's cabin, full of mice and bats and a rattlesnake den under the porch. Late one night I lay uneasily on my cot, with my arms hanging over the sides, just trying to relax in the heat that the house still held from the day. I suddenly realized that a teensy little tongue was licking my finger. ...muffled scream... I dived--deep--into my sleeping bag. And do not know what kind of animal was tasting me.
