because i've never had a really big party and 25 would be a good age to do it. plus i've never been thrown a big party. we just didn't do that...i think it would be fun to get everyone i know together in a big giant room and see what they do.

The Bible verse correctly quoted states that "money is the root of all kinds of evil." Money becomes evil if it becomes your master.

If posessions mean more than people or experiences, you've got a problem. Anything that replaces God is evil. Anything that hurts yourself or other people is bad, or sin, I'd say even evil. (If the tenses of bad, go "bad", "worse" , and "worst", then I suppose "evil" is even one step further? "Evil" must be more consuming of the person's spirit than "bad". Maybe "evil" is more of a lifestyle of badness, or a habit of being bad or a lack of concern or conscience about it. That's a good plinky prompt...what distinguishes bad from evil?)

So, in short,is money the root of all evil?
It depends on how you use it.

To further clarify (biblically speaking), I John 2:15-16 outlines 3 kinds of sin: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. All sins fall into this category in some way, I believe, and some can blur the lines, falling into more than one category.

While I would not say money is the root of all evil, I would point out love of money could easily fall into ALL three of these categories of sin. So it's probably something to be on my guard against, huh?

For me personally, I would like to have money to travel and to help out my family. Which is what I mostly use my money for currently, (except for bills of course), so I hope if I ever get more of it, I won't change my habits and become materialistic or change who I am. I just hope I get to travel more and help more people. "To whom much is given, much is expected." Just like with the parable of the talents, God gives more to those who use wisely, so I must remember this as well. Money's not bad in and of itself. Money is a freaking piece of paper that only means something because society says so.

If money=power, if money=satisfaction, if money=self-esteem/worth, if money=friendship, if money=status, then yes I can see how this could go on and on and money eventually could play a role in every kind of evil out there.

But that still means money is only the root of evil when used improperly.

My advice (from a lower middle class college kid who hopes to make her way into the upper middle class or lower high income bracket within the next ten years): Be on your guard against the ploys of the devil, in everything, and keep yourself in check. Does your walk match your talk? Not to quote Katy Perry, but okay, to quote Katy Perry, "put your money where your mouth is." :)

Conclusion:

I would not give money such a high and lofty position as to say it's the root of all evil. Money is not THAT important.

First, I would pay off my parents house. Then I'd take my immediate family to Ireland. Because we've always wanted to go there and they deserve something nice. Then I'd take my friends to a party on a beach on Easter Island. Because my friends believe in me and I want to go there anyway. Then, I'd take one or two close friends and go see the Mayan pyramids.

I'd give some to whatever church I end up at. Because they'd deserve it. I'd give some to Invisible Children. I'd give some to that one homeless lady in Nashville that I think really just needs a second chance (Wilma? I'm usually tipsy when I encounter her...but her story doesn't sound fake. She just lives in a fake world....this world.)

I'd send Andrew, my older brother to some kind of art school. Because he deserves a job he'd like. I'd give Ben the same amount and tell him to invest it however he likes. (not necessarily invest in the conventional sense, but "use") Because he's the one of us who learned how to manage his money decently:)

I'd donate some to the music department of some school where all they care about is sports.

I'd "give away" some of it to my car loan. Because I deserve it. Because I could use that extra bit of time or money for good things.

I'd give some to somebody who reminded me of myself and needed a fresh start. Because I have to "give it away" according to the prompt... if i could keep some of it tho, I'd give myself a fresh start.

It's actually a play, but it reads well. Great social commentary with a laugh on every page. My favorite line is actually the one at the beginning that Jack makes about playing the piano with feeling rather than accuracy. (Because I actually tried that arguement as an 11 year old in piano lessons and I had never even heard of this play!)

The other night I was talking to my friend about how comedy had changed, but really when it comes down to the core of it, a lot of things are just being recycled, with a new twist. My example was the old Abbot and Costello skit about "Who's on First". I argued that that same idea was used in The Princess Bride during that part where the villian (sorry I forget names) is switching the cup with the poison on Cary Elwes' character. The dialogue there is pretty much a "who's on first".

I think I will now take this arguement one step further, and say that Oscar Wilde used it long before either one of these with the idea here of the two people who both use Ernest as a pseudonym (for a lack of a better word). And then "halarity ensues"....:)

My friend Lora convinced me to go to the Southern Women's Show with her two years ago. Not considering myself a stereotypical "girl" in any way, shape or form, I was skeptical. However, sometimes I make an effort, so I went. And hated it.

And yet. We were on our way out, and we hear a man speaking of "not one, but two" super shammies for $9.99. Taken in by this original dialogue, and the fact that he did soak up about two gallons of water with a single shammy, Lora and I both left with "not one, but two" super shammies.

We currently use them to dry our hair.
