    • Who needs new when there's Antique Stores?
      • I like to shoot with film cameras because they can teach a lot about photography without letting you cheat the way digital can.

I do not know how many times I have shot, and just thought "Oh I can just fix this in photoshop later.

In fact, I remember taking photo courses in college, and the professor requiring us to shoot film.

We had to shoot with a 50 mm lens on 100 ISO slide film for the class.

Some manufacturers like Lomo, still produce film cameras.

In any small town, you can find an Antique store with tons of old cameras.

A brand new Polaroid camera is going to cost you over $60, however a functioning vintage camera at an Antique or Thrift store will normally cost you $1-$5.

Or my Diana, which will cost you $45, I picked up for $10.

The first thing to do when picking up a used camera is to make sure it still works.

Since most of these cameras are made of pretty simple construction, they are easy to check.

All you need to do is turn the film advance knob and make sure the take up spool turns. If you can trip the shutter with the back off you should see light through then lens.

That little trick wont work for all cameras. Polaroids require film in them before the shutter button will do anything. And more advanced film cameras require film and batteries.

However, the more modern film cameras that this trick will work on are usually more expensive, and you should consider buying those through online camera stores like B&H.

    • My road-trip mix tape
      • I am taking a road trip on Saturday, so I need to go through my music and burn a nice CD for the drive.

I normally burn two CDs of songs for a drive, because after 3 hours on the road it is time for a new CD.

As I stated in a previous post; I like to sing to the guitar solos or other instrument in the song.

These three songs provide an excellent opportunity for this.

What songs would you recommend? Your comment will be ignored if you mention people like Lady Gaga because that stuff is terrible.

    • My Favorite Summer Memory
      • Summertime was a special time growing up.

We lived in El Paso, which was about 10 hours away from the rest of my family in San Antonio.

My grandparents own a beach house down in Rockport, Texas and we would drive all the way from El Paso to Rockport; picking up the cousins in San Antonio.

I do not know how my parents, aunts and uncles could do it.

All of my cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents sharing a three bedroom, two bathroom house.

On these trips I learned to love sitting out with a fishing pole, sometimes we actually went fishing although most of the time it was just a flimsy excuse to sit outside and enjoy nature.

Two of my uncles were Eagle Scouts and believe that just being outdoors wasn't good enough.

They tried to teach us what to notice out on the coast to find the fish.

They had the opinion that if you couldn't sit still and enjoy nature; even if you didn't catch any fish, then you do not belong on their boat fishing.

If you know anything about me, you know this was no small task. Somehow I managed to wake up every day at 5 a.m., ride out in the boat to the spot and wait for the fish to start biting.

This would last for about a week or two, then we would pack up our things and start the long drive back to El Paso.

My parents deserve an award for putting up with that.

    • A haiku about Bacon Cheese Waffle Fries
      • Last night I joined a friend for dinner and went to have a treat for dinner.

I am aware that Bacon Cheese Waffle Fries (BCWF) is not the healthiest thing in the world to eat, but it makes perfect bar food.

Every now and then you just need to go crazy and eat something you love. Everything in moderation is safe.

BCWF is what you would refer to as a "sometime food."

        Bacon Cheese waffle,
fries a tasty treat I will eat,
        you dip it in ranch.
