Even if you think you are lying to protect the other person, in the long run (especially if they find out) it will only cause more grief.

- My collarbone scar
-
I have a few scars, but only one that I find the least bit interesting. It's not from a burn or a scratch.
Senior year field hockey season, last regular season game before playoffs began. We were playing against our rivals and I was psyched because we were up by one goal with 7 minutes left. The ball gets free so I chase it down the left sideline. I'm then broad-sided by a player on the opposing team. When she hit me, she fell down in front of me and my stick became caught underneath her. My momentum was bringing me downward, as well, but a little sideways instead of right on top of her. Normally, I would brace my body for impact with my arms, but sine my hands were on my stick which was under the other player and everything happened so quickly, I was unable to do so.
I don't remember pain at this point. All I can recall is screaming and rolling around on the ground. The sensation is difficult to describe, but basically I knew something was wrong with my shoulder area. The athletic trainer thought I had dislocated it, although I was pretty sure it was worse than that. I had a police officer hold my elbow up in the air as I lay there waiting for the ambulance because that was the only way I could stay somewhat comfortable.
What had happened was: When I landed on the ground, all of the momentum and weight from my body was focused on my left shoulder, as it was the first thing to hit. This then led to my left collarbone breaking. Normally, these heal on their own and you just wear a sling. Mine had broken and moved in a way that if were to not get surgery on it, I may lose function of my upper arm and shoulder.
The surgery was short and I obviously was under the whole time. This whole story is leading up to my scar. It's minimal because they used a laser to cut into me and place the titanium plate and six screws on top of my bones. It is still noticeable, though, and sits right on top of my left collarbone (which sticks out because of the metal..you can see the screws!).
I used vitamin E on it at some point to try to make it go away, but then I changed my mind and figured I'd like some sort of proof that this all happened.
P.S. I was unable to play in the playoffs that year. It was the end of my field hockey career.
