In defense of my vice:

See, the sad thing is that I don't know that I've got one anymore - so there's nothing I can really defend, since I no longer smoke, I drink rarely, don't do drugs, and I'm not a whore.

There's always tea.

So, if that's my only vice, then I defend it by saying that a) it's delicious, b) it makes you feel good when you don't feel good, and c) it's got caffeine. Who can say no to caffeine?

One of my quirks: Singing

Singing
It doesn't seem to matter what it is exactly, I'll sing along to it. I do try to curb it somewhat; but, apparently, it drives people dippy. I used to have a good singing voice, apparently, but I don't know anymore. I'm kind of afraid to open my mouth and find out.

Bathroom breaks
I drink a lot of teas, so I need to stop a lot more frequently than most folks seem to. That also probably drives people crazy. It's all right though, because a good stretch of the legs does wonders to help keep a healthy circulation.

Fidgeter
On the other hand, you can count on me for one good thing: I am not a fidgeter. I may do the odd unconscious thing now and then. Who doesn't? However, I don't tap, whistle, twiddle, twist, maim, fold, bend, spindle, mutilate, or otherwise.

This would have to be a combo deal: used bookstore and neat junk shop. That sort of comfortable eclecticism, that sort of random joy, appeals to me. We could sell art supplies too, odd furniture and clothing.

I'd like it to look and feel as far away from big box, corporate antisepticism as it possibly could. That's the sort of atmosphere that kills the joy of shopping and socialising, and makes people constipated.

Maybe there could be a room in the back or above, with fluffy couches and a big TV where we could watch movies once in a while. We could hang works by local artists on the walls; have readings and such; art nights where people get together in groups and make stuff - fun stuff. It would have to be next to a decent café that sold tea in huge mugs and was equally as comfortable; or, perhaps we could have a café attached.
Never in all my days have I read a book that made me laugh out loud quite so much. People on the tube in London must have thought I was lunatic I was laughing so hard at some points (although, we are talking about London, which seems to foster a certain brand of lunacy, so you'd think the'd be well used to it). Some of the jokes are funnier if you've been to England, because some of it's very British, but otherwise I'd say it's a good giggle for anyone who appreciates Pratchett's style of humour.

I've never actually been on a long-distance roadtrip. Something I regret, but that's the way the cookie crumbles and all. So, while this is nowhere near long, it certainly is odd.

My friend Diane and I went to Buffalo (it's only about an hour's drive) to get a talking Stimpy doll. Us poor, unfortunate Canadian types were denied talking Stimpy dolls, so we had to cross the border to get one. Whilst there we amazed the lady at the lunch counter by asking for mayo to put on our hotdogs - a heretofore unheard thing, mehinks; and on the way back we amused the border guard, who took one look in the back seat of the car after asking us our purpose for visiting the US that way, and waved us on through without fanfare. I suspect he'd seen many talking Stimpy dolls before.

Buffalo is a land of weird wonder. On another roadtrip there to see a friend DJ at a club, Diane's car was broken into and her radio stolen. Nice criminals unhooked instead of cutting the wires, piled everything neatly in the front seat that they'd taken out of the glove box, and I believe they even folded up the blanket in the back seat.

I suppose this all depends on how one views or defines nicknames - are we, for instance, merely talking about the pet names that come from familiarity only, or do we include the nicknames we choose for ourselves on the Internet?

Most of my nicknames stem from my first name: Lo, Nita, Auntie Lolo (it's what happens when you know a young child - though I was a bit freaked out the other day when she called me by my name).

Pangea was the first nickname I chose on the Internet, and that was the supercontinent before the separation of the continents into what has now necessitated the science of plate tectonics.

charlie_brokentoaster, the name I have on MySpace (an account I pay little attention to anymore), was the name of my imaginary friend when I was little. Honestly, I don't buy into the concept of celebrating Valentine's Day. Assuming for the moment that I was in love with someone, in a relationship, committed, one day out of the whole year to produce evidence of the above means not one damned thing. If I can't believe in the person all the time, then roses in the frigid bowels of winter aren't going to give me anymore peace of mind or anymore faith. True romantic feeling, passion, honey bunches of oats, are things that need constant work, input, effort. It's not anymore special of a day than any other, and if you can't celebrate your love for someone all the time, well...

Sometimes I think people mix vice with addiction. To me, vice is more of a choice, an option, a cheat, a sneak, something one does when no one is looking... an indulgence. An addiction is not a choice, it's an obligation, a monkey on your back.

So, do I have a vice? Sadly, no. There is no willing decadence in my life at the moment. Do I have an addiction? Hell yes, and that addiction is caffeine in a teacup. I know it's not much, but having quit smoking lo these many years since, it's all I've got.

If I drank more I could consider vodka cocktails my vice, but I don't like to drink alone, so that indulgence is out.

I'm open to any suggestions.
