    • The Movie That Moved Me
      • Its a movie that a simple summary does not suffice. The movie revolves around Caden, a theater director working on his masterpiece...a living life-sized New York City production housed in a warehouse. As his play grow and grows it becomes almost like a Russian Doll, with a smaller warehouse inside the first, and actors playing Caden and crew into what seems like infinity with actors playing actors playing actors playing people. The lines between art and reality blur for Caden, sending his personal life into a tailspin. All the while, Caden is slowly dying throughout the movie.

This movie could be an entire semester study of film as art, using symbolism, foreshadowing, and character development. Its about, love, heartbreak, art, life, death, and human nature. I love the symbolism throughout the film, and I love even more that things become more apparent during the second and third viewing of the film. It's an art film, so if you're more of an Ace Ventura type movie viewer, you probably won't like this one.

There are subtle symbolic elements that are so awesome when you figure them out. For example, Caden and his wife are artists, Caden in theater, and his wife a painter. Caden gets a divorce as his project grows infinitely larger, meanwhile his ex-wife's paintings are becoming smaller and smaller, being viewed with magnifying glasses in art galleries. They become polar opposite,as do their respective arts. Caden's wife is named Adele Cotard, which sounds like 'a delicate art.' There are obvious symbols like a house burning down around characters who don't seem to notice, and some are tons of subtle like the stuff aforementioned. The whole movie is like this. It must be viewed more than once to be truly appreciated. It is the only film I have ever watched that I felt compelled to immediately watch it again. And then again the following day.

In a word, it's brilliant. It is a film that, while receiving mixed reviews today, will one day be looked at as equally important as Citizen Kane.

    • What I lost and would give anything to have back
      • I used to manage a non-profit college radio station. I ran out of money for tuition, and then lost the job as manager. The only requirement to work there was being a student, which, ironically I could no longer be thanks to my radio salary. I made the unfortunate call of picking a career that can't pay for itself. (See teacher, pilot, public service, broadcasting). Sadly, 3 part-time jobs were not enough to fund college. While station manager, I had developed a 5 year plan for the station, and only (better than) half of which was implemented before my untimely departure. I would give anything to have completed my 5 year plan. I often think about people who refer to their high school years as "the best years of my life." They clearly did not go to college with me. In all honesty there is a hole in my soul from this experience. I do not like unfulfilled promises. I have a chip on my shoulder from a promised childhood trip to Disneyland that never materialized. We were tobacco farmers that ran out of money. History repeats itself.

On the bright side, I squeezed the most out my college experience while it lasted. As a morning drive DJ, I met countless celebrities, I was the first DJ to play Cage the Elephant, was a proud political activist-- protesting the war when it wasn't cool, was treasurer of the college Democrats, and I made lifelong friends. Although it was short-lived, I would never trade it for anything! The reason why it hurts to look back sometimes is that it was, frankly, FUCKING AWESOME!

    • Terrible work uniform: the beaver
      • I wish I had a picture of the costume, but imagine a giant beaver (no you perv, the animal!) in college-mascot style. That was the suit. It smelled like sweat inside.

The beaver suit for WBVR-FM "The Beaver" was by far the worst "uniform" ever. They didn't twist my arm, but I needed the money. As mentioned in a previous post, the $5.50 an hour calls for desperate measures. $50 bucks for a few hours is like striking gold in a radio job. It's like the Million Dollar Man used to say... "everybody has a price..." and mine was 50 bucks. Don't judge me, I wanted to buy some meat instead of ramen noodles. It wasn't that bad until I struck terror into the heart of a small child. It's kinda fun being a living cartoon, until someone's child acts like they've just stared into the face of the devil.

    • New rules for Radio Stations
      • Rap stations can't advertise bail bonds
It's bad enough that you play songs revolving around bitches, blunts, and 40's, but advertising bail bonds seems like a blatant attempt to set the civil rights movement back 30 years. Seriously. Ask yourself what MLK Jr. would think of your station.

Pop stations can't play the same artists in the same hour.
I shit you not, one time I was forced to play Mariah Carey 5 times in one hour. I have the scars on my wrists to prove it.

Morning Shows have to ditch the sound effects guy
Nothing says "I'm a talentless ass-clown" like having some douche play a clip from a tv show that is funny every time the host's jokes aren't. *cough*Bob and Tom*cough*

College Radio jocks have to be less pretentious about music
College jocks have to be a little pretentious, they are after all on the cutting edge of awesome new music. But pretending you don't like the Beatles when Abbey Road is secretly your favorite album is overboard. Don't be a hipster douchebag.

        Pay DJs more
After spending three years at the top station in town working for a measly 5.50 an hour, eating ramen noodles daily, and giving plasma to buy the gas to make it to work, I can easily say air talent is grossly underpaid. Sure the sales staff brings in the money, but without talent, they don't have shit to sell. Hook a brother up!

    • New Rules for Voting in America
      • Gay people can't vote Republican
A gay person voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders. Why would you vote for people who compare you to pedophiles and compare your love to bestiality? It's bad enough they're out of touch, but its even worse they keep their own in the closet.

        Poor people can't vote Republican
While we're on the subject... Poor people!! Stop voting Republican. You didn't get that second Bush tax cut that everyone says you did. Did it trickle down to you? No. The wealthiest 1% bought another yacht instead.

        Hispanics can't vote Republican
Oh wait, you don't. Well don't start. Republicans have put the War on Housekeepers above the War on Terror. Arizona's immigration policy proves it.

        Tea Party can't vote Republican
Middle class Americans are paying less in taxes now than they were under Bush. Did you hear that? That was the sound of a Tea Partier's head exploding. Don't worry, you don't have to vote Dem. You should vote Libertarian anyway.

        Unemployed Republicans can't vote Republican
You know the Republicans are blocking your unemployment right? It's not that you don't want to work, there's just nothing there for you. Yet your own party calls you lazy and just cut your throat. Seriously, do some soul searching before heading out to vote this November.
