- In response to: "If you were in a movie right now, what music would be playing?" dry sand or salty barren, almost impossible to find. the incubating bird slips out of harmony, seen rarely. "this is the song of Solomon, hear a woman singing"

- In defense of a bitter brew...
-
In the intensive care unit of a hospital in Costa Rica, I visited in 1987, at precisely four in the afternoon the coffee cart was wheeled into the room, and even those who would die before the morrow turned its head were given sup of their daily sip. I find it a civilised notion. And it has nothing whatsoever do to with Starbucks.
From pole star to home ground, coffee grounds. Median between day light and dream sleep, even the cat seems to prefer it, sniffs my cup with her cat nose. With a stirring of blood, it draws out the dream flight into the morning's musing. The taste of blood, nearly. My own dark heart served hot. Bitter resurrection.
Between what has passed and what is yet to come, return to this steadying: warm ceramic cupped between hands. For all I have wandered, one direct line remains, dear grandfather of the mountain, coffee merchant I never met.
If it is morning and there is a warm cup between my hands and a bitter taste upon my lips, the world has not yet fallen; the world is not far from me. Is this not the elixir of life for which the Spaniards mistakenly battled the Floridian lowlands? Is this not alchemy's unclaimed progeny tucked away in an attic drawer?

- A Perfect Finish Wine Bar is great for drinks with an old friend
-
I discovered A Perfect Finish through my husband who was hired to play jazz guitar there a few times.
This small independently run wine bar has attempted to go beyond the usual San Jose sports bar mentality and to create a kind of ambiance suited to intimate conversation and aesthetic discernment. They have made a compromise between overstuffed chairs and a large screen television. They offer wine, chocolate and fine tequila in tasting flights featuring delectables from around the globe. I am charmed by the faux fireplace with sofas arranged around it, dim lighting and live jazz music. It is the kind of place that feels conducive to opening into gentle and warm conversation.

- Noodling for comfort
-
At the check out line the grocery clerk sleep talks the usual question, "Did you find everything you needed, ma'am?" Never mind that even at forty years old, I still can't get used to people calling me "ma'am." I begin to sleep talk the usual answer "Yes, thank you. Wait, I mean NO. I couldn't find the Cup-of-Noodles. You know the kind you add hot water to that are already in a cup? I walked up and down the pasta aisle at least four times!" "Did you think to look in soup?" "Um...no...I was looking for noodles."
salt sent squiggle slurp soaked a spicy brew, noodles give and fight between teeth,
promise pepper, collapse into starch
