    • Every day, I Swim
      • Swim
It gives me an hour of uninterrupted mindlessness and (because of the goggles) anonymity. Without this I'd undoubtedly go pop.

        Walk dogs
Fundamentally, because the dogs need exercise. However I also enjoy the walks, whether it's 20 minutes round a local park or a day in the hills. Dogwalkers are a breed apart, I think. I don't know any other folk who'll dawdle in pouring rain or who'll chat quite happily before sunrise; and who, in winter recognise you by the light of your torch.

        Read
Sometimes it's because I need to - I read in order to be able to write a paper; more usually it's because I want to.

    • My favourite shoes
      • Two pairs of shoes in soft Spanish leather
I loved the faintly metallic maroon pair as much as I loved the pair in bottle green, so I'm afraid I bought them both; but the kitten heels and pointed toes contributed, as did the leather petalled flower over the tongue.

    • I'm downsizing, but I have to keep my fountain pen
      • my fountain pen
It's written homework, university assignments, exam papers and a thesis; shopping lists, journals, stories and postcards; birthday cards and love letters; letters of sympathy; good news, bad news and reams of gossip;it's signed cheques and contracts and letters of resignation and - once - an autograph book.

    • The best stationer's I've found - on either side of the Atlantic
      • It's full of stationery - not computing accessories but traditional stationery, such as pencil sharpeners, writing paper, envelopes (with and without windows (in every size and many hues)); fountain pens and bottles of ink. You have a choice of pads of paper - A3, A4, A5, A6; lined, squared, blank; with and without margins; and exercise books, almost ditto. There are shelves of string, staples, glue; masking and parcel tape; lever-arch and box-files; ring binders, document wallets, filing cabinet files. It's true that they don't still stock ribbons for typewriters or for dot-matrix printers, but the assistants neither bat an eyelid nor raise an eyebrow when asked if they do - they merely fill in an order form.
